Hyland Ponds Open Space is an understated natural area featuring two small fishing ponds encircled by the Hyland Ponds Trail. A nice spot to spend an afternoon, this outdoor expanse is centrally located and features picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.
On-site, there are two small ponds featuring a surprising variety of fish species. Past visitors have reported catching catfish and carp as well as panfish like sunfish, crappies, minnows, chubs, and bluegill. For fishermen looking to cast a line close to the city or families trying out their poles before a fishing trip, the Hyland Ponds are the perfect place to do it.
The short Hylands Pond Open Space Trail allows access from a nearby neighborhood and circles the open space’s two Ponds before connecting to the Farmer’s High Line Canal Trail. Hikers and cyclists looking for a longer route can then take the Farmer’s High Line Canal Trail to the US 36 Bikeway, or follow it north to the Hylands Creek Trail and the City Park Trail.
You can expect to find most anglers here drift fishing, still fishing, spin casting, fly fishing, and trolling. If you’re headed out to Hyland Ponds, we recommend fishing near cliffs and steep shore banks, dams and falls, and freshwater lakes and ponds.
Furthermore, only non-Motorized Hand-Launch watercraft are permitted at Hyland Ponds. This is because the ponds are quite small, so motorized boats would disturb the peace. Additionally, there are no boat ramps or docks at Hyland Ponds, so you will have to portage your boat from the parking area.
The Westminster Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department offers many events and programs at Hyland Ponds Open Space throughout the year. Special holiday events include an Easter Egg Hunt and a visit from Santa Claus. Throughout the summer, there are free concerts on select Thursdays. In addition, they also have weekly fitness classes, hiking and birding programs, and family fun nights.
If you’re looking to have a picnic in the park or make use of one of the on-site facilities like bathrooms or benches, you are sure to find what you’re looking for at Hyland Ponds Open Space.
