The grand opening of Carpenter Park Saturday marked the completion of decades-long plans for the 150-acre site at Colorado Boulevard and 112th Avenue. Park improvements were funded through Thornton’s park and open space tax revenues along with two Adams County Open Space Grant awards and a Great Outdoors Colorado Local Government Grant award.
The new amenities include an amphitheater, which can seat between 300-500; an 18,000-square-foot playground and splash pad; a boathouse for the new paddleboats; concession and bathroom facilities; shade shelters, and the indoor carousel the city acquired from the biggs store that used to be at Thornton Town Center.
With play structures designed for kids of all ages, Carpenter Park is a popular destination for outdoor fun. The park features an amphitheater, a carousel, a boathouse, a playground, a skate park & sports, slides, bridges, swings, and rocks to climb. For a fee, there is a carousel little ones can ride and a boathouse where you can rent paddle boats which costs varies based on boat size and residency. The trails around the lake and park are perfectly designed for family bike rides or scoots. There are also restrooms and water fountains at the park, and plenty of places to spread out a blanket and relax.

As well, adjacent to the courts is the multipurpose area where people can fly kites and throw Frisbees and a 14,529-square-foot skate park featuring a street course and bowl. This is located near the corner of the 112th and Colorado area of the park. There are also multiple canopies over the play structure and covered tables, however, most of the play area is shade-less. Also, a variety of swing options are available. You’ll find 4 baby swings, 4 traditional swings, and 2 accessible chair swings. The fountain area is also pretty big so make sure to get there early to get a spot in the shade.
