City Park is a neighborhood and urban park in Denver, Colorado. Located in east-central Denver, the park covers 330 acres (1.3 km2). The park features the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Ferril and Duck Lakes, and a boathouse. It is also the name of the neighborhood that contains the park, though the park occupies most of the neighborhood. The City Park Golf Course lies immediately north of the park. City Park is the largest park in Denver.
It’s located to the east of downtown Denver, a mile or so from the city center. It is one mile long and three-quarters of a mile wide. The park is bounded by West-York Street, South-17th Avenue, East-Colorado Boulevard and North-23rd Avenue.
City Park has the same boundaries except for its southern boundary, which is Colfax Avenue, two blocks south of 17th Avenue. The entire neighborhood is only two blocks wide, but about a mile long. In the southwest corner of the neighborhood is East High School and a green area called City Park Esplanade, which extends the park two blocks south to Colfax Avenue. The eastern part of the neighborhood around Colfax Avenue (as well as parts of the Congress Park neighborhood across Colfax) is also known as the “Bluebird District”, for the Bluebird Theatre on Colfax and the urban developments nearby. Additionally, there is a neighborhood called “City Park West”, which is situated just west of the park and is commonly referred to as Uptown. It shares its southern and northern borders with City Park, as well as its eastern border with York Street.
Colfax, in particular the City Park neighborhood, has become a popular area with many trendy restaurants, stores, and other businesses, including the newest Tattered Cover bookstore and Twist & Shout record store just across the street. New residential and commercial developments, including the Twin Towers of the Pinnacle at the former site of Mercy Hospital, have also been built in the neighborhood.
